Solexine was used as a fuel additive to improve the operation of petrol engines. It was known for cleaning carburettors, improving combustion and reducing knocking and exhaust smoke. It also helped protect valves and valve seats, particularly in older engines originally designed for leaded petrol.

Solexine became especially popular during the transition to unleaded petrol and was typically added to the fuel in small quantities.
